Drivers can now request change day of license plate restriction

By the A.M. Costa Rica staff

Those drivers interested in changing the day of a restriction to enter in San José can request a special permit at the Information and Procedures Center of the Ministry of Transportation. The restriction is based on the last number of the license plate.

According to the ministry, this special the permit applies only in cases where there are two or more cars affected by vehicle restriction at the same time within the same family or the company.

That means the plates of vehicles in the same household or company have the same final digit.

The restrictions to enter the capital area are: Mondays vehicles with plates ending in 1 and 2, Tuesdays, plates ending in 3 and 4, Wednesday plates ending with 5 and 6, Thursdays, plates ending with 7 and 8 and Fridays, plates ending in 0 and 9

For example, if there are two cars at the same home, but both license plates end with  0 or 9 neither vehicle can enter the city on Fridays. In this case, the owners may request the limitation for one cars to be moved to the next working day. One  vehicle would continue being restricted on Fridays and the other would be restricted on Mondays.

To request the special permit, the car owner should fill a form, also attaching a copy of the current traffic tax, known as marchamo, proof of the car title and the vehicle inspection report knows as RTV.

"Once the request is received, it will be studied and the response will be answered within a period not exceeding 10 business days," said the ministry in its statement.

The driver who obtains this special  permit will no longer face a fine of $40 for driving inside the capital with a prohibited license plate number.

The ministry is receiving the request for the changes on plates restriction from Monday to Friday, from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. For more information about this process, the ministry has the lines 2539-5600 or 2539-5602.
