Doctor from U.S.
trains Costa Rican specialists in hernia
operations

Social Security announced that Dr. Flavio
Malcher, Coordinator of the Montefiori
Medical Center in New York, provided
training on new hernia surgery techniques
to Costa Rican doctors.

Program at Montefiore Hospital
in New York.
Dr Malcher main focus of Abdominal Wall
Surgery, including inguinal, ventral and
incisional hernias and complex abdominal
wall reconstructions.
Dr. research focus is on quality of
life after hernia surgery; evolution of
minimally invasive techniques and
robotics; biomaterial and meshes and their
interaction with wound healing and
innovative alternatives and tailored
approach to abdominal wall defect.
According to Social Security, Dr. Malcher
did two surgeries at Calderon Guardia
Hospital*, in San Jose. The first
was abdominal wall reconstruction surgery
and the second was a surgery to remove a
hernia that developed after the patient
had stomach cancer.
In both surgeries, new techniques were
shown with the use of laparoscopy.
According to Dr. José Ángel Ortiz-Cubero,
of the Calderon Guardia Hospital, 50
patients with hernia issues are operated
on every year.
"Some of the hernia surgeries performed in
the Calderon Guardia were due to traffic
accidents, severe intra-abdominal
infections, and pancreatitis among other
causes," said the Social Security in its
statement.
According to Social Security, the program
of inviting foreign specialists who train
with new surgical techniques will
continue.
According to the U.S. National Library of
Medicine, a hernia happens when part of an
internal organ or tissue bulges through a
weak area of muscle. More common types of
hernias are Inguinal, in the groin,
umbilical, around the belly button,
incisional, through a scar, Hiatal, a
small opening in the diaphragm that allows
the upper part of the stomach to move up
into the chest and congenital
diaphragmatic, a birth defect that needs
surgery.
