By the A.M. Costa Rica staff The deputies of the Government
Commission approved a series of reforms to
bill No.21.336 that will reform the Public
Employees Law.
---------------------The new reforms include within the plan for public employees' salaries, to workers from the Justice Department, public universities, municipalities, the Elections Supreme Court among other public institutions. According to deputy Pablo Heriberto Abarca, from the Christian Social Unity party, with these changes, all institutions must coordinate with the Planning Ministry and the Civil Service Department the salary scales of their employees. The action of the deputies comes after several Chambers expressed their opposition to the recently approved exemptions to regulate the salaries in some public organizations. Last week, the Costa Rican-American Chamber of Commerce, AmCham, asked for deputies to refrain from making exceptions and to include all public employees. ![]() AmCham claimed the motion, made by the Deputies Commission in charge of studying the pre-approved bill, to exclude public universities from the law of single salary scale, as well as not having the obligation to comply with the budget limits that are proposed in the bill. According to AmCham, the approval of the reforms on the Public Employees Law is part of the agreement with the International Monetary Fund, IMF, which is the basis for restoring economic stability and will provide the necessary support to the local and international financial community so that Costa Rica can continue to be an attractive investment destination. Other chambers, such as Tourism, Hotels, Restaurants, Exporters, Food and Industries made similar complaints to deputies. The bill to regulate salary and budgets in government institutions continues under analysis in Congress. It is expected that in the next few days, Congress will release the lawmakers' decision to approve, reject or request for more changes on the bill to change the actual Public Employees Law. Should public workers receive the
same salary for the same type of work?
