According to the most recent report from the Ministry of Health, cases of patients with dengue have increased in past weeks, especially in the regions of Guanacaste* and the Caribbean Coast*, with 1,272 and 658 cases reported respectively.

The viral diseases Yellow Fever, Dengue Fever, Zika, and Chikungunya are transmitted mostly by Aedes aegypti mosquitoes. Symptoms typically include a high fever, headache, vomiting, muscle and joint pains, and a characteristic skin rash.

During this year, the places with the highest patient registrations have been Sarapiquí*, Pococí*, Guácimo*, and Alajuela*.

Also, in areas such as Aguas Zarcas*, Turrialba*, and Jaco Beach*, there were more registered cases.

"Central America suffers a significant peak of dengue cases, and our country is not far behind since we have an increase of 160 percent of cases, compared to 2018," said Rodrigo Marín, from the Ministry of Health. "Honduras, El Salvador, and Guatemala were the countries to report more cases, even dozens of deaths, in such situations we make a call to the population to fight against the mosquito, eliminating all possible breeding grounds in homes and communities."

Ministry authorities continue to carry out fumigation of more than 110,000 houses, and the elimination of about two million dengue hatcheries.

On the other hand, authorities report a reduction in cases of patients with Zika and Chikungunya virus.

In the case of Chikungunya, during the first seven months of the year, from January to July, 60 cases were reported. In that same period last year, only 87 cases were reported.

In the case of Zika, 89 cases were reported during the same period this year. Last year there were 285 cases reported.

The ministry authorities call on the population to continue working with hygiene measures to prevent Dengue, Zika, and Chikungunya.

Recommendations from specialists are:

- Eliminate mosquito breeding sites such as containers with water.

- Apply repellent against mosquitoes.

- Wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants.

- Use mosquito nets.

According to the statistics of the ministry, last year 2,735 patients with the virus were registered.

The first case of the Dengue virus registered in Costa Rica was in 1993.
