By the A.M. Costa Rica staff Despite the restrictions on driving hours, forced by the government to try to stop the contagion of covid-19, during the first four months of this year, from January to April, 137 people died in traffic accidents, reported the Police of Transit. Compared to last year when the first ban-on driving order was required in April 2020, this year there were 26 more deaths recorded in the first four months of last year. The increases in traffic accidents during the restricted period are due more to reckless driving than trying to prevent people from driving. "It is not, then, locking up people or not allowing them to drive (referring to stop fatalities). It consists of modifying behavior on the road, but it is evident that this has not happened," Alberto Barquero Espinoza, Director of the Traffic Police said. ![]() According to police statistics: » Most of the people died in accidents between 6 p.m. to midnight. » Most of the deceased were between the ages of 21 and 50. » The majority of deaths occurred in accidents on a Sunday. » Of the total deaths, 115 were men and 22 were women. » Speeding and overrunning the opposite lane were the reckless driving that caused the majority of accidents.
