Counterfeit weight loss product is a scam

The Ministry of Health warn about the sale of a product branded "Elv Alipotec Raíz de Tejocoteque" that is allegedly utilized for weight loss, but does not have legal registration to be marketed in the country.
According to the ministry, this product is sold online on their website, www.alipoteccr.com. The fake product is also being sold on several social media pages.
The product was detected when a complaint about the sale of the product was received by ministry officials. The report clarifies that the product may have side effects such as diarrhea, abdominal pain, body pain, fatigue, drowsiness, among others.
The product has only been offered for sale on their webpage and social media, not in stores.
The product claims their main ingredient is the tejocote plant, although there is no scientific evidence to support the use of that plant for weight loss. The tejocote (Crataegus mexicana) is a species of hawthorn known as Mexican hawthorn.
The tejocote fruit exists, and may be registered as a food supplement, but there is no legal product made based on the tejocote root registered in the country.
Authorities warn that the "Elv Alipotec Raiz de Tejocote" product origin, ingredients and quantities are unknown. The conditions of how this product has been manufactured, stored, transported and handled are unknown. The alarming lack of information is a health concern, unless there is more information about the product to guarantee it is acceptable for human consumption, it will be considered counterfeit.
Specialists recommend not buying, selling or using the product "Elv Alipotec Raiz de Tejocoteque" offered on social networks until there is more information about the alleged weight-loss product.
Health authorities ask for people to report any suspicious sales of fake products to dac.denuncias@misalud.go.cr or by calling the ministry at 2223-0333.
