Costa Ricans recognized with Florence Nightingale medal

Two Costa Ricans, Carolina Soto-Villalobos and Christopher Lewis Calderón-Bailey, received the Florence Nightingale Medal in recognition of their work in the Red Cross.

Soto is a nurse and Red Cross volunteer for 18 years. She is also the Regional Volunteer Coordinator in Puntarenas, first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation instructor. She worked in several rescues of wounded people in mountainous areas. She is a rescue scuba diving expert.

Calderón has been in the Red Cross for more than 20 years. He is a rescue specialist and an instructor in first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation. He is currently chief of the Pre-Hospital Care Compliance. Calderón is also a paramedic specialized in water accidents, collapsed structures and confined spaces.

Both Soto and Calderón are trained in rescuing people from buildings and car accidents.

The medal is "known as the highest international distinction that can be received by a male or female nurse, or persons recognized for proof of courage and selflessness to help victims of armed conflicts or disasters," the Red Cross said in its statement.

International Florence Nightingale Medal awards, instituted in 1912, recognize those distinguished in the nursing field.

"It is the highest international distinction a nurse can achieve and is awarded to nurses or nursing aides for exceptional courage and devotion to the wounded, sick or disabled or to civilian victims of a conflict or disaster or exemplary services or a creative and pioneering spirit in the areas of public health or nursing education," according to the International Red Cross Committee.

The medal is named in honor of an outstanding British social reformer, statistician and the founder of modern nursing Florence Nightingale (May 12, 1820 - August 13, 1910).

“For Costa Rica, it is an honor that two Red Cross members have been distinguished with this award,” Milton Chaverri, Director of the Costa Rican Red Cross said.

According to the humanitarian organization, during the 136 years that the institution has existed in the country, 7 of its members have received this recognition.
