Costa Rican surfer Brisa Hennessy won the Women Qualifying Series 5,000 Corona Open, WQS championship, which was held in Riyue Bay, Hainan Island, China, last week.

“Since I arrived at this place, I felt a tremendous connection with the wave. This victory is very special for me for another good year I want for me, ” said Brisa Hennessy in a statement by the National Surf Federation.

According to the federation, this is the first time in the history of surfing in Costa Rica that a woman won in this competition.

According to the federation, Hennessy won after beating Vahiné Fierro of Tahiti, who was "the promise of the French Olympic team who was only 0.14 points to reach the Tica."

Hennessy won with a score of 12.00 points versus 11.86 for Fierro after a heat of 30 minutes.

Hennessy already has obtained a place for Tokyo 2020 Olympics. However, there are 12 remaining places for five men and seven women and an opportunity for more Costa Rican team surfers to qualify by competing in the World Cup.

In December, Hennessy received the recognition of her breakthrough performance of the year by Surfer Magazine. The recognition as a representative of women surfers came after Hennessy qualified for the Olympic Games.

Surfer Magazine, founded in 1960 by John Severson, is specialized in worldwide news on this sport.

"Brisa is the only Hispanic American, and she also qualified for another year, thanks to her effective role in the second world division," said the federation in its statement.

This achievement is the first not only for Costa Rica in the sport of surfing but the first for Central America, said the federation. According to the federation, in addition to Hennessy, only two other Latin Americans surfers, both from Perú, managed to qualify.

The 2020 Summer Olympics, commonly known as Tokyo 2020, is the international multi-sport event that is scheduled to take place from July 24 to Aug. 9 in Japan.

Jan. 8, the federation announced that the government has put forward Costa Rica as one of the countries seeking to host the next surfing world championship, International Surf Association 2020 World Cup.

The government authorities are in the process of finding the budget that will finance the ISA World Cup that would take place for the first time in Central America, said the federation.

The government is among the five countries that have been nominated. The others are El Salvador, Spain, Australia and Japan. The winner will be announced by the International Surf Association this month.

According to the federation, the government has been meeting during these first days of the year, to find the possible support among public organizations for this event, which will be seen live by more than 4 million people around the world.

In August deputies of the Legislative Assembly voted in the first round in favor of bill No. 21.241 to declare the third Saturday of October as Surf National Day, in addition to declaring this sport as a public interest.

The law also authorizes to the Costa Rican Sports Institute and the Costa Rican Tourism Institute to take action and promote activities whose purpose is the commemoration of the Surf National Day.

According to data provided, congress also noted that in 2016, Costa Rica hosted the Surf World Games in Jacó Beach, Puntarenas Province.

Also in August 2009 the first Surf World Championship, organized by the Costa Rican Surf Federation, was held in Hermosa Beach, also in Puntarenas.
