By the A.M. Costa Rica staff Miss Costa Rica, Ivonne Cerdas, was chosen in the top 10 semifinalists of the 69th edition of Miss Universe on Sunday. Cerdas, 28, is an engineer and was chosen in November 2020 to represent the country in one of the most famous beauty pageants in the world. Before the big gala, on Friday, Ms. Costa Rica was chosen within the top 20 in a preliminary competition. She appeared in a folk costume designed by Daniel Moreira and manufactured by John Lecksell.  "It was very important to me that the folk costume was at the height of Miss Universe couture. This being the case, John Lecksell agreed to help us with the making of the gown under strict guidelines of the organization of My Universe and designed a 100% national concept," Ivonne Cerdas said. "In my opinion, the result was wonderful, and it is a beautiful representation of our country. The gown is inspired by provincial colony period women, bright, detailed and so beautiful," she added. For the second competition of the night, Ms. Costa Rica paraded in a swimsuit where she was chosen among the top 10 contestants. She was selected alongside representatives from Jamaica, República Dominicana, India, Perú, Australia, Puerto Rico, Tailandia, México and Brasil. This year's jury is made up only of women: Sheryl Adkins, Zuleyka Rivera, Arden Cho, Keltie Knight, Deepica Mutyala, Ratyana Orozco, Christine Duffy and Brook Lee. The 2021 Miss Universe winner was Miss Mexico Andrea Meza, who finished ahead of Miss Brazil Julia Gama and Miss Peru Janick Maceta Del Castillo. Meza is 26 years of age and hails from Chihuahua City. The competition took place on Sunday at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, in the U.S. state of Florida, under strict sanitary protocols.
