President Carlos Alvarado swore in the Costa Rica team on Wednesday. They will participate in the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympic Games. The Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games will take place from July 23 to Aug. 8. The Paralympic Games will be played from Aug. 24 to Sept. 5 in Japan. “Remember at all times that you have a country that admires and defends you; in the year that honors the 200 years (of independence) you will write the history of a small nation that never stops to amaze with what it does,” Alvarado said. During the event, the athlete Andrea Vargas was named as a leader for carrying the Costa Rican flag at the Olympic Games opening parade. Athletes Camila Haase and Steven Román were named as leaders carrying the flag at the Paralympic Games opening parade. The Costa Rica Olympic team: » Brisa Hennessy Kobara and Leilani McGonagle Cada for surfing. » Luciana Alvarado Reid for gymnastics. » Kenneth Tencio Esquivel for BMX Freestyle. » Andrea and Noelia Vargas-Mena and Gerald Drummond in athletics. » María Vargas-Barrientos and Andrey Amador- Bikkazakova for cycling. » Beatriz Padrón and Arnoldo Herrera for swimming. » Ian Ignacio Sancho for Judo. Recently, the Pfizer branch in Costa Rica donated 130 vaccine doses needed to immunize the Costa Rican delegation (including athletes and coaches) for the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympic Games. According to the health authorities, vaccinating this group was a priority because the games are taking place in a few weeks.
