ISA World Stand Up Paddle

Three Costa Rican athletes, Marcel Oliveira, Valeria Salustri and Michael Gutierrez are competing in the 2019 Surf City El Salvador ISA World SUP and Paddleboard Championship, which is taking place this week in El Salvador.

According to the Surf Federation, the three athletes will compete in the distance and technical category in six of the nine World Cup competitions.

"Basically, they are the top three of the current national ranking of Costa Rica," said the federation in its statement.

161 athletes from 27 countries are set to represent their flags and compete in the paddleboard championship.

According to the ISA, World Championship 2019 will mark the eighth edition of the competition, this year taking place on the picturesque coast of El Sunzal.

The competition kicked off Sunday afternoon, crowning the first World Champions of the event in the stand up sprint races.

“It’s going to be an amazing word championship,” said Fernando Aguerre, the ISA president who was unable to attend due to a broken leg. “We are working together to place El Salvador where it belongs as a mecca of surf tourism."

The schedule for the competition is as follows"

Monday: long distance races.

Tuesday: Technical race preliminary rounds, team relay preliminary rounds and team relay final.

Wednesday: Technical race finals.

Thursday through Sunday: Stand up surfing.

The closing ceremony for the competition also is Sunday.

The 2019 Surf City El Salvador ISA World SUP and Paddleboard Championship can be viewed live on IsaSurf.org from now to Sunday.

On Nov. 5, the Surf Federation reported that the Costa Rican junior surf team finished participation in a World Junior Surfing Championship 2020, in 13th place in the general record.

According to the federation, after eight days of competitions, the national team reached 13th place of the 44 teams that competed in the World Cup that took place in Huntington Beach, California, from Oct. 26 to Nov. 3.

"For the second consecutive year Costa Rica repeated the position in the table, just in the same place and with the same number of selections present for a Junior World Cup" said the federation in its statement.

Concerning the table of Latin American countries, the Costa Rican team positioned itself in the third-best place, behind Perú and Brazil.

Among the Costa Rican competitors with the best positions was Malakai Martinez in 11th place and Aaron Ramirez in 17th place. Both managed to enter the top 20 of the general table, said the federation.

According to data provided by the federation, the best positions that the national team has achieved was seventh place during 2016 and 2017.

The winners in the ISA World Junior Surfing Championship 2020 was the United States team. Second and third place went to Hawaii and Japan, respectively.

In Latin American countries, the winner team was Brazil. The second place in Latin American teams went to the selection of Perú and the third place went to the selection of Costa Rica.
