Costa Rican Government calls on Nicaragua to cease church siege

By the A.M. Costa Rica staff

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has called on the Nicaraguan authorities to stop the police siege of relatives of political prisoners, church representatives and the faithful who are in the Church of San Miguel de Masaya.

Also, the ministry requests the government of Nicaragua to release 13 Nicaraguan citizens, who are considered political prisoners.

"The government of Costa Rica reiterates its deep concern about the systematic violation of the human rights of Nicaraguans, especially the right to freedom of expression, peaceful demonstration and religious freedom, all of them guaranteed by the Nicaraguan Constitution," said the ministry in its statement.

Sunday, the General Secretariat of the Organization of American States expresses its concern and condemned the latest acts of repression and detention of protesters reported in Nicaragua.

"The siege and harassment of the families of political prisoners in the Church of San Miguel de Masaya is a blatant violation of the rights of people who are expressing themselves peacefully for the freedom of their relatives," said the organization in its statement.

In the same way, the General Secretariat rejected the detention of at least 13 people who were showing their support for the relatives of prisoners and calls for their immediate release. "There arrest is even more deplorable as these people were under the protection of the Catholic Church, an entity recognized by all political actors in Nicaragua," said the Organization of American States

According to the organization, the General Secretariat continues monitoring closely the situation in Nicaragua and reiterates "the need for the restoration of civil and political freedoms, peace, justice and the return of democratic institutions in the country."

On Sunday the organization released the report of the High-Level Commission on Nicaragua. It can be reached at the Organization of American States site.

On May,
Eddy Montes, a U.S. navy veteran, was shot dead in a Nicaragua prison.

He was a naturalized U.S. citizen who served in the Navy, but ultimately returned to the Central American country where he fought for a change in government, his family said.

Montes died Thursday after he and other prisoners tried to snatch a gun from a guard while the International Red Cross was visiting the prison, the Nicaraguan interior ministry said, adding that the guard acted in self-defense. He had been jailed after protesting against Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega in October last year, during protests that have killed at least 300 people. The protests erupted over welfare benefits but spiraled into a broader movement to oust Ortega, who is serving his third term as president.

The U.S. State Department condemned his death as a killing at the hands of Nicaraguan riot police and urged the government to thoroughly investigate the incident. It also called for other political prisoners to be released.

“The lack of justice for these prisoners and for the hundreds of innocent civilians killed by Ortega’s security and para-police forces shows the regime’s utter disregard for human life and democratic freedoms,” it said in a statement.

The Nicaraguan government prohibited the demonstrations last November and has accused the protesters of intending to cause chaos.
