The Ministry of Technology announced that analog television broadcasts from antennas located in Cerro Buenavista, in the Talamanca range, must discontinue no later than Sept. 22.

The termination will also extend to the Irazú Volcano, in the Central Mountain Range, with a deadline of July 2022.

In August 2019, the ministry announced the complete transition from the traditional analog television system to digital television, throughout the country.

According to the ministry, digital television is a new way of watching tv, which allows more programs made available through the same channel. It also provides a sharper image and sound.

Specifically, open television is television channels that are transmitted by air and are received free of charge in each country. This technological change allows the reception of the signal in mobile devices such as cell phones, tablets, among others.

Among some of the advantages of the digital television system, according to the ministry, are:

» Digital television will be available throughout the country, where analog TV currently is not.

» Digital technology has a sharper image and improves sound quality.

» Digital TV allows you to enjoy more productions on the same channel simultaneously.

» Digital technology optimizes the use of frequencies, allowing additional channels or new services in the future.

» Higher quality and better reception mean digital television can be received on mobile devices like tablets, cell phones, and computers, among others.

» This technology allows the use of interactive menus.

According to the ministry, people who do not have cable, or paid television, must buy a converter and an antenna, to avoid being left out of the digital television signal.

"The antenna must receive a VHF signal, which covers channels 2 through 13, and a UHF signal, which covers channels 14 through 69," the ministry said in its statement.

In addition to the antenna, a converter must be installed to tune the digital signal, known as a set-top-box. "It is a device that receives the digital signal and makes it one that is understood by the TV or screen," said the ministry in its statement.

These devices must be purchased only by people who do not pay for cable TV service.

According to the ministry, it is not necessary to buy a new TV. However, if the person wishes to buy one, specialists advise buying a TV screen of the Japan-Brazil version.

For more information on the digital television conversion that took effect today, the ministry has opened the line 800-2467-2883.
