Costa Rica has 8 cities featured in the most recent edition of American Continent Cities of the Future 2021/22 developed by Foreign Direct Investment magazine, known as FDI Intelligence. The U.K.-based publication is part of the British daily newspaper Financial Times. According to the creator of the ranking, the country has key geographical areas for foreign direct investment, human capital, and cost effectiveness, among other categories. For example, San José is recognized in seven categories such as Human Capital, Lifestyle, Economic Potential, Cost Effectiveness and Business Friendliness, among others. San José is the only Latin American city in the ranking for human capital and lifestyle in mid-sized cities, led by Quebec, Canada, and accompanied at the top by other Canadian and U.S. cities. The capital also places among the top 25 cities of the future with regard to the foreign direct investment (FDI) strategy. “San José in Costa Rica takes third place. The Costa Rica Investment Promotion Agency (CINDE) facilitated a record 81 new investment projects in 2020, including 26 new companies and 35 new expansions,” the magazine said in its statement. First place on this list went to New York in the U.S., with second place going to Mississauga in Ontario, Canada. According to the magazine, cities across the globe are gradually coming out of the covid-19 crisis, unleashing a new set of policies aimed at reigniting growth and development in urban areas as vaccination campaigns keep the pandemic in check.
