The Tourism Institute announced that the country was recognized as “Best Cruise Destination in Central America” for the Reader's Choice 2019 awards.

According to the institute, the awards are presented and announced by the Porthole Cruise Magazine in its 21st edition printed for the months of November-December.

"The winners of the awards were selected by online readers and followers of the magazine who had to choose from 51 cruise-related categories." said the institute in its statement.

Porthole Cruise Magazine is the world's leading cruise travel magazine, with a bi-monthly periodicity and whose objective is to invite the reader to plan their next trip, said the ministry. "The publication presents photographs, content that invites reflection and variety of topics from ships and cruise destinations, life on board, to activities on land," said the ministry.

This is the second international recognition of the country by a tourism specialized magazine.

Nov. 8, the Selling Travel trade magazine from the United Kingdom selected Costa Rica as the best wildlife and nature destination for 2019.

The award was received by the Costa Rican Tourism Institute during the World Travel Market international tourism fair that was taking place in London, England.

According to the institute, Selling Travel readers include retail travel agents, home-based workers and reservation staff of tour operators throughout the United Kingdom.

“We did a reader survey this year that asked agents in which travel segments they were most interested. Wildlife and nature were among the first three segments, showing that the best destination for wildlife and nature award is one that is particularly important for the UK travel trade,” said Laura Gelder, editor of Selling Travel.

Nov. 3, the largest liner in the port's history arrived in
Limón. The ship was the Norwegian Joy with 3,883 passengers and 1,700 crew members, said the Board of Port Administration, known as JAPDEVA.

According to Norwegian Cruise Line, the Norwegian Joy is 167,725 gross tons and 333.46 meters long.

The cruise ship arrived at 7 a.m. from Colón, Panamá. There was a nine-hour layover at the Port of Limón until departure to Roatán, Honduras, at 4 p.m., said the Tourism Institute.

Also the same day, the Island Princess docked and remained in port until 6 p.m. when she sailed to Grand Cayman Island, the institute reported. The ship has a capacity of 2,200 passengers.

According to the institute, 85 artisans, six tourist companies and more than 200 tourist transport vehicles received hundreds of tourists who decided to disembark and get to know the Caribbean coast.

"They will tour the province knowing their natural beauties, enjoying local food and contributing to the economic revival of Limón," said the institute in its statement in advance of the visit. "The best selling tour is the one that goes to the Tortuguero canals."

According to Andrea Centeno, president of Limón public port authority JAPDEVA, the promotion of the port for cruise ships will be one of the main activities in the new business vision of the institution.

"As of today and thanks to the facilities we have, we have been able to be the gateway to Limón of almost 200,000 cruise passengers per year," said Centeno.

These two cruise liners, Norwegian Joys and the Island Princess are the seventh and eighth to arrive in the country during the 2019-2020 season.

According to the institute, for the current season, which began in September and will last for up to six months, Limón is expected to receive 112 ships, 224,000 passengers and more than 90,000 crew members.
