Costa Rica ranks 13th in the Junior World Surfing Championship

After eight days of competitions, the national team reached 13th place of the 44 teams that competed in the World Cup.

Costa Rica ranks 13th in the Junior World Surfing Championship

The National Surf Federation reported Monday that the Costa Rican junior surf team finished participation in a World Junior Surfing Championship 2020, in 13th place in the general record.

According to the federation, after eight days of competitions, the national team reached 13th place of the 44 teams that competed in the World Cup that took place in Huntington Beach, California, from Oct. 26 to Nov. 3.

"For the second consecutive year Costa Rica repeated the position in the table, just in the same place and with the same number of selections present for a Junior World Cup" said the federation in its statement.

Concerning the table of Latin American countries, the Costa Rican team positioned itself in the third-best place, behind Perú and Brazil.

Among the Costa Rican competitors with the best positions was Malakai Martinez in 11th place and Aaron Ramirez in 17th place. Both managed to enter the top 20 of the general table, said the federation.

According to data provided by the federation, the best positions that the national team has achieved was seventh place during 2016 and 2017.

In next year's World Cup, coach Jim Hogan plans to include Sam Reidy, national champion from Dominical in the last two editions of the National Surf Circuit, in the national team. He has finally nationalized after 15 years of living in the country, said the federation.

The winners in the ISA World Junior Surfing Championship 2020 was the United States team. Second and third place went to Hawaii and Japan, respectively.

In Latin American countries, the winner team was Brazil. The second place in Latin American teams went to the selection of Perú and the third place went to the selection of Costa Rica.

On Oct. 3, the Federation announced that coach of Jim Hogan has chosen the 11 surfers teens of the national team.

The team of women under 18 are Eva Woodland, Paulina Summers and Coral Wiggins, The team of men under 18 are Malakai Martinez, Cedric McCracken and Sebastian Mora.

The Team of women under 16t are Paulina Summers, Indiana Ferri and Rachel Aguero. The Team of men under 16 are Aaron Ramirez, Darshan Antequera and Leonardo Apreda.

According to the federation, the majority of these teams are surfers who have previously participated in championships.

The new ones selected are Agüero and Apreda, both 13, who had a great season in the national circuit, as well as a good performance during the preselection concentrations, said the federation in its statement.
