By the A.M. Costa Rica staff Puerto Limón has enormous cultural wealth for the tourism industry. "For example, in a one-hour walk around Parque Vargas and the Cultural Tourism Center, we saw 19 buildings that are of Costa Rican historical cultural heritage,” said Minister of Tourism Gustavo Segura. The first step to making Puerto Limón in Limón Province a visible tourist destination is to meet with local tourism businessmen and entrepreneurs at the Tourism Center Cultural of Limón. The ministry is implementing the platform so-called "We are Caribbean" whose objective is to promote Limón as an authentic tourism destination among visitors who value the cultural richness of Costa Rica, educated people who seek expressions of culture, biodiversity and gastronomy. “Limón has natural beauties, the people are beautiful, but we always visit the South Caribbean and North Caribbean without visiting the center of Limón, which is the spring of art, culture, gastronomy and we cannot lose it because much of the idiosyncrasy of the Costa Rican is explained in the history that Puerto Limón contains," Segura said. ![]() According to the ministry, various actors and institutions have joined forces to promote Puerto Limón city. One of the projects is Heritage Puerto Limón with the Technological Institute of Costa Rica, which consists of a project for recognizing Caribbean Architecture. That includes plans for labeling and signaling of the 18 heritage buildings with technical sheets and QR codes that will provide access to available digital content such as videos, photographs, official files, free content download and more with the support of the Cultural Heritage Center and the National Library. According to the authorities, independent entrepreneurs should register their business, such as in the Ministry of Finance, Institute of Tourism, Social Security, among other government institutions, to allow them access to funds, loans and support from state institutions. This is the second recent plan of the government to promote tourism in specific zones of the country. In March, the ministry began encouraging travel to the country’s rural areas during Holy Week. ![]() Among the sites promoted are Turrialba Canton in Cartago Province, Monteverde Canton in Puntarenas Province, Tamarindo Beach in Guanacaste Province, Golfito Port in the southern zone of Puntarenas Province, Los Santos Canton in the southern zone of San José Province and Sarapiqui Canton in Heredia Province. The tourist guides created by the institute intend to provide information to visitors about the place's history, gastronomy, recommendations, access routes and a list of cultural activities that will take place in these destinations. "With these guides, it is more attractive to explore and rediscover the natural charms, historical details and cultural presentations, in addition to all the activities available for tourists in these beautiful regions," Segura said. Tour Guides campaigning "Vamos a Turistear" or let's go touring in the English Language, were recognized on the Institute of Tourism site. -------------------------- What other rural zones should be promoted by the government to boost tourism?
