After the Taliban led a major offensive making its way into Kabul, Afghanistan during the withdrawal of U.S. troops from the country, there were several reactions of leaders about the treatment of this extremist religious political group on citizens and more harshly on women. Reaching the capital gave them control of the country, leaving many to fear for their lives, including women. ![]() One of these is Vice President Epsy Campbell who said that for the life and rights of women in Afghanistan, the United Nations and its member countries should come together to create an international front for Afghan women and girls. "They need us, let's act now as United Nations!" she wrote on her social media. The government of Costa Rica has opened its borders and will serve as a humanitarian bridge for Afghan women looking for refuge, Campbell said on Wednesday. "We must all take necessary steps within our scope of action to safeguard the lives and well-being of the children and women of Afghanistan," she said. According to Campbell, women bear the worst consequences from the crisis in Afghanistan and no woman must be left behind. "Costa Rica is committed to making it happen (referring to aid to Afghan women refuge)," the vice president said. It is expected that during this week, the government will provide more information on how the strategy to help Afghan women will be carried out. The Taliban have been condemned internationally for the harsh enforcement of their interpretation of Islamic Sharia law, which has resulted in the brutal treatment of women. This week, Costa Rica supported the declaration of the European Union on the protection of women and girls in Afghanistan. According to the European Union Ministers of Foreign Affairs, after gathering for an extraordinary meeting to consider the latest momentous developments in Afghanistan, the country finds itself at a crossroads after decades of conflict. The wellbeing and security of its citizens, political and human rights achievements, as well as regional and international security are at stake. The EU called on all parties in Afghanistan to respect all commitments made and to pursue further an inclusive, comprehensive and enduring political solution. "The protection and promotion of all human rights, in particular those of women and girls, must be an integral part of these efforts and women should be supported and able to contribute fully to this process," said the EU in its statement. The EU recalled the importance of preserving and building on the political, economic and social achievements of the Afghan people since 2001, such as the rights of women, children and persons belonging to minorities, including access to education and health. According to the EU, they aim to continue its support to the Afghan people and to democracy, good governance, human rights and social and economic development in the country, including efforts to prevent and manage the risks associated with an unstable Afghanistan in continued conflict, resulting in regional instability, drugs trafficking and uncontrolled irregular migration. ![]() Headlines also cover another group of people stagnant in Panama after leaving their countries pursuing a better life in the United States. The directors of Migration of Costa Rica, began meetings with authorities from Colombia and Panama to coordinate the migration flow of people from Haiti, Cuba and Venezuela, among other nationalities. ----------------------- How should Costa Rica bring to the country Afghan women running away from the Taliban?
