International News By the A.M. Costa Rica staff and wire services The government, through the Ministry of Foreign Relations, announced its support for the resolution issued by the Organization of American States, OAS, to deplore the recent actions taken by the Nicaraguan government against human rights. The Washington, D.C-based OAS, includes almost all American Continent countries, including Nicaragua and Venezuela. Cuba does not form part of the OAS. According to Alejandra Solano-Cabalceta, representative of Costa Rica in OAS, said that in Nicaragua, "an electoral process can be developed with free, fair, transparent elections, with international observation, and that guarantee the plurality of participation in electoral and political processes, as well as respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms of all inhabitants." The OAS resolution expressed alarm at the recent deterioration of the political climate and human rights situation in Nicaragua. There are daily reports on how the Daniel Ortega administration in Nicaragua continues to practice misusing legislation, intimidating and threatening members of the opposition by restricting political participation. Ortega is also known for his disregard, persecution and censorship of the press. The organization concluded that the measures adopted by the government of Nicaragua do not meet the conditions for transparent, free and fair elections to which all member states have committed under the Inter-American Democratic Charter, which calls into question the legitimacy of the incoming November elections. According to OAS, it is a fact that the government of Nicaragua has not implemented, as of May 2021, electoral reform measures consistent with applicable international standards to ensure the scheduled 2021 November elections are free and fair. The organization members “unequivocally condemn the arrest, harassment, and arbitrary restrictions placed on presidential candidates, political parties, and independent media and to call for the immediate release of presidential candidates and all political prisoners,” they said. The American country's representatives strongly urge the government of Nicaragua to implement without delay legislative and other measures consistent with applicable international standards to promote transparent, free and fair elections. This includes welcoming OAS and other international election observers. The OAS resolution was just to continue monitoring the electoral process in Nicaragua, for its consideration and possible submission to the General Assembly. The OAS resolution is one of many organizations in the region that expresses its rejection of the Nicaraguan government's actions against human rights by arresting leaders of the opposition to the government of President Ortega. On Monday, Central American organizations rejected the Nicaragua government actions. They stood together and expressed their concerns about the Nicaraguan state-inflicted violations of the fundamental rights of their society, such as freedom, legal security and democracy. -------------------------- What other non-violent actions can democratic countries' do to return democracy to Nicaragua?
