Costa Rica is one of the enviro-friendly countries, says Prime Minister of the Netherlands

During the opening session of the Climate Adaptation Summit on Monday, organized by Mark Rutte, Prime Minister of the Netherlands, Costa Rica's leadership in protecting the environment was recognized.
The Climate Adaptation Summit has the goal of addressing the current situation, dramatically altered by the covid-19 pandemic.
According to Rutte, despite the small size of Costa Rica, the country "is one of the climate and the environment-friendly countries."
According to Alvarado, the 2020 hurricane season showed once again the serious social, labor and health impacts that the climate crisis will continue "if we don't change our mentality towards new paradigms and social commitments." Climate change is a human rights issue, he added.
Among the actions in the strategy against climate change is the so-called Plan-A, which evaluates current and future climate risk for the 82 cantons of the country, Alvarado said.
The virtual summit was attended by Ban Ki-moon, co-chair of the Global Adaptation Commission, Antonio Guterres, the U.N. Secretary-General, Angela Merkel, Chancellor of Germany, among other leaders.

Last week, the government launched the plan for the High Ambition Coalition for Nature and People, whose goals are to conserve 30% of the land and sea surface by 2030, stop the loss of mass animal species and protect ecosystems for human well-being and nature.
The plan is led by Costa Rica and France, with the United Kingdom as co-leader for maritime issues and backed by an additional 50 countries, according to the government. President Carlos Alvarado was in charge of the official presentation during the virtual edition of the One Planet Summit, organized by France.
The coalition groups need more than 50 countries to reach a global agreement to protect at least 30% of the planet's land and sea. The plan was presented by Costa Rica in September 2019, during the Climate Summit gathered by the Secretary-General of the United Nations in New York. In this event, President Alvarado received the 2019 Champion of the Earth award.
The coalition began from the conviction based on the recommendation of scientists to face both the crisis of biodiversity loss and the climate crisis, to achieve a minimum of 30% of biodiversity protection by 2030.
During this time, Alvarado announced the Blue Forever Fund, the first of its kind in Latin America, created to ensure the financial sustainability and long-term conservation of marine biodiversity in the country.
This $3.5 million fund is financed by the Ministry of the Environment and the Costa Rica Forever Association. However, the goal of the authorities is to increase this capital through international donations, to finance projects that allow the government to reach the goal by 2030.
