After the signing of Costa Rica's adhesion to the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, OECD, by President Carlos Alvarado on Friday, the country enters the final phase to become the 38 member of the organization.
“Today an important event is celebrated as the final step of a country project, which is a national consensus through three government administrations, supported by all the different political forces in the country and society to coincide with the commemoration of 200 years as an independent Republic,” President Alvarado said.

The signed agreement will be sent to the France Embassy in San José, from where it will be reported to the OECD Permanent Delegation and the representatives of the other member countries. When this process is concluded Costa Rica will formally become a member of the organization.
Costa Rica will be the fourth Latin American country to be part of the organization, joining Chile, Colombia, and Mexico. Other countries such as Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom are among the 37 member countries of the OECD.
Being part of that organization will help the country in constant improvement in public policies and strengthen national efforts to guarantee transparency and efficiency, the Ministry of Exports said.
According to the congress, a process of more than 11 years was required, and the approval of 14 new laws and modifications in public institutions to achieve the process of being added to the organization.
The National Union of Chambers approved the agreement with the OECD, which will attract more and new foreign investments to the country due to the application of policies to reduce paperwork, less bureaucracy and modernizing the State.
The agreement is also approved by the Costa Rican-American Chamber of Commerce, AmCham, which considers how the entry of Costa Rica to OECD shows that the country has the optimal conditions to present itself as a safe and attractive country for investment.
