By the A.M. Costa Rica staff Costa Rica has imported 6,218,205 vaccines against covid-19, according to the National Emergency Commission. The most recent shipment containing 157,950 doses of Pfizer vaccines arrived on a DHL cargo last night at the Juan Santamarķa International Airport. These are part of the 4,191,755 Pfizer doses imported. The country purchased 6,001,125 Pfizer vaccines to inoculate more than 3 million people. ![]() Last week, the country received the Spanish government donation of 69,600 doses of AstraZeneca. ![]() Recently, 319,200 AstraZeneca doses arrived in the country, donated by the government of Canada. ![]() In July, the U.S. government donated 503,100 doses of Pfizer vaccines. The country also imported 775,200 doses of AstraZeneca vaccines as part of the 1,000,000 purchased doses for the treatment of more than 500,000 people. In addition, the government has received 259,350 doses through COVAX, which includes approved vaccines, such as AstraZeneca, Pfizer and Moderna. The country purchased 2,037,600 doses to provide treatment to more than one million people. The total vaccines purchased and donated to Costa Rica are about 9,930,625. This total could protect more than 4.9 million people living in the country. At least 83% of the population, about 4,274,344 million people in Costa Rica, must be fully vaccinated to keep infections down and achieve herd immunity, according to Social Security. As of Tuesday, 1,727, 299 people have completed their two-dose treatment, approximately 33% of the population. However, the virus continues advancing throughout the country. Authorities reported on Thursday that 502,362 covid-19 cases have been detected since 2020, of which 91,724 are active cases. Since the reported first case in the country, there have been 5,919 deaths listed as covid-19 related, approximately a 1.2% death rate in Costa Rica, according to data provided on the Health Ministry website.
