Chile and Costa Rica donated nine and a half tons of food supplies and personal protection to Haiti.

On Aug. 14, a magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck the Tiburon Peninsula in Haiti. Deaths are estimated to be 1,941 as of Aug.17, according to the Primature de la Republique D 'Haiti report.

Chile provided air transport directly to Haiti with the cargo of eight tons of non-perishable food, one ton of water and half-ton of personal protective products, provided by the National Emergency Commission. The humanitarian aid cargo left the Juan Santamaría airport on Wednesday to Haiti.

“Chile aid with the plane and the humanitarian aid is from Costa Rica, which was able to react so quickly to the Chilean offer and in two days it was possible to have almost ten tons that go directly to the benefit of the Haitian population that needs it so much," Óscar Alcamán Riffo, Chilean ambassador to Costa Rica said.

More countries will be implemented emergency response. According to the European Commission of the European Union, they mobilized €3 million in humanitarian aid for Haiti.

"The European Union is allocating €3 million in humanitarian funding to address the most urgent needs of the affected communities," the organization said in its statement.

To ensure the fastest possible intervention, EU funds will be implemented by humanitarian partners already active in the emergency response and will support and strengthen their capacity to swiftly provide humanitarian aid to the most vulnerable Haitians, they added.

"The funding will address the most immediate needs such as the provision of medical assistance to local overwhelmed hospitals, water, sanitation and hygiene services, shelter and protection services for the most affected and disadvantaged communities," the EU said in its statement.

This is the second large-scale earthquake killing thousands in Haiti in eleven years. A catastrophic magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck Haiti in 2010 on Tuesday, January 12. The epicenter was near the town of Léogâne, Ouest department, approximately 16 miles west of Port-au-Prince, Haiti's capital.

It was estimated three million people were affected by the quake. Death toll estimates range from 220,000 to 316,000, according to the Haiti government report.
