century of diplomatic relations By the A.M. Costa Rica staff As part of the celebration of 100 years of foreign affairs between the governments of Costa Rica and Canada, the embassies coined a medal that symbolizes the union between both countries. The medal which represents both country's emblems will be on display at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Museum and Gold Museum, in San José Province. Due to the pandemic, the act of celebration was held virtually between Rodolfo Solano Quirós, Minister of Foreign Affairs and François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Canada. Both reaffirmed their commitment to sustainable development, the fight against climate change, the defense of democracy and human rights, the ministry said in its statement. Solano took advantage of the meeting to offer Canada the use of The Central American Integration System, CAIS, where Costa Rica will hold the presidency of the organization during the first semester of 2021, as a channel to approach the Canadian government with the region, with the goal to generate greater opportunities to work on joint projects and actions for the economic recovery of the region after the pandemic. The CAIS has been the economic and political organization of Central American states since 1993 for cooperation for regional peace, political freedom, economic development and democracy. Those goals remain, despite Nicaragua being part of the organization. Minister Champagne thanked Solano for the invitation and the virtual activity organized by Mauricio Ortiz Ortiz, Costa Rican ambassador to Canada. An action of solidarity from Canada's government to Costa Rica was the recent donation of medical equipment to Social Security.  In October, Canada, through its embassy and the International Organization for Migration, IOM, donated medical equipment worth $22,882. The donation included three portable electrocardiographs, two portable medicine coolers and five oxygen concentrators, which were purchased with the Canadian Fund for Local Initiatives, Social Security said in its statement. The donated equipment is part of the government's contribution to support the most vulnerable people, especially those in the northern zone of the country, Nuala Lawlor, representative of the Canadian Embassy said. The equipment is managed by the Center for Attention to Emergencies and Disasters and installed in the Mobile Medical Unit in Los Chiles Hospital in Alajuela province. According to Alejandro Bonilla-Herrera, from the Center, the donated electric refrigerators are portable, high-tech and will allow the temperature to be maintained in adequate ranges for the safe transport of medicines and vaccines from one unit to another. Portable electrocardiographs analyze the activity of the hearts to detect cardiac health issues. Oxygen concentrators are equipment that divides oxygen from other gases through filters and supplies it to the patient with respiratory issues. -------------------------- How can Canada and Costa Rica help Nicaraguans reach democracy in their country?
