By the A.M. Costa Rica staff The Juan Santamaría International Airport, SJO, located in Alajuela Province, obtained the certification of the Airports Council International, ACI, in the category of best “Customer Experience,” according to Aeris, the company in charge of managing the airport. Based in Montreal, ACI is a global trade representative of the world's airport authorities. Founded in 1991, the organization represents airports' interests with governments and international organizations. According to Aeris, Juan Santamaría is the only airport in the country to be accredited for "Customer Experience" and the third in Latin America, such as the Carrasco International Airport in Uruguay, Lynden Pindling Airport in the Bahamas and Quito International Airport in Ecuador. “This accreditation is the result of the efforts of all of us who work at the Juan Santamaría International Airport as each day is an opportunity to provide the best service," Rafael Mencía, Executive Director of Aeris said. The Customer Experience recognition is part of an ACI worldwide program that evaluate the efforts and explorations made by airport administrators to enhance the travel experience through: 1. Understanding the client. 2. Strategy. 3. Measurement. 4. Operational improvement. 5. Governance. 6. Airport culture. 7. Design innovation of services. 8. Collaboration with the airport community. The airport reached the second level of accreditation. The challenge is to increase its certification position by improving practices in its management together with the entire airport community, Aereis said in its statement. Recently a marketplace platform was launched allowing passengers to access and purchase products from different shops in the airport. ![]() The new Food Court of 460 square meters of restaurant space was opened next to hall 8 of the airport, just before the boarding lounge area. To build the new restaurants area, it was not necessary to close any of the 20 boarding rooms that are interconnected with 13 corridors. The Food Court includes the Britt Café Bakery coffee shop, El Patio folk Costa Rican food restaurant and the fast-food TORO Gourmet Burgers restaurant. The airport is home to 27 stores, including restaurants. And at each place passengers are only attended by following health guidelines in order to avoid covid-19 contagion. The new Food Court is one of the recent improvements at the airport. In February, the area for international arrivals had some renovations. The new arrival area, of 445 square meters, has separate internal sectors for travelers, airport taxis, tour operators, authorized shuttles among others. -------------------------- What other improvements should be made in the airport?
