Representatives of the Rural Development Institute met with leaders of the Venado Island community where part of the first peninsular port will be built to connect all the islands located within the Nicoya Gulf.

Located between Puntarenas Province and Nicoya Peninsula are the islands of Chira, Venado, Caballo, Bejuco, San Lucas, Gitana and Tortuga.

According to the institute, the mainland port will have areas for docking ships, transporting passengers, fishing, loading and unloading merchandise.

The University of Costa Rica is responsible for investigating the possible areas where the port will be built. The investigation concluded that the area known as Florida is optimal for the construction of a plan polygon-shaped port to allow vessels to arrive and stay without problems.

According to the studies carried out, the port could be of the polygon floating dock type with balance rods, to handle the variations in sea level. Once the optimal areas for the construction of the port have been defined, the authorities open the bid process and hire a private company that will be in charge of the design plans, and construction.

The port development plan is being led by the Rural Development Institute and the Costa Rican Institute of Pacific Ports.

Another port in the process of infrastructure improvements is Paquera Ferry, in the Nicoya Peninsula.

In May, the Copisa company won the deal to carry out the infrastructure improvement works at the ferry budgeted at $5,005,166, announced the Ministry of Public Works.

The infrastructure improvement plan includes the docking, departure area for the ferries, as well as the waiting, boarding and disembarking areas for people and vehicles at the port.

Copisa is expected to finish the ferry improvements in 9 months.

In addition to the infrastructure improvements, the ministry hired the IDOM consulting firm for $163,00 to take care of the technical studies and designs.

Currently, the ministry is in the process of analyzing the hiring of a consulting company that is in charge of the administration and supervision of the project. This job is budgeted at $400,000.
