Costa Rica staff The Congress, with 32 votes in favor during the first round of voting by the deputies, has pre-approved bill No. 22,519 entitled "Law for the relief in the payment of the Marchamo."  The so-called Marchamo is a compound tax on the right to drive a specific vehicle. The payment of this tax corresponds to the year 2022 and must be paid in advance between December 1 to 31, 2021. The bill establishes a reduction in the cost of the tax as follows: - A reduction in 50% of the tax on private vehicles valued less than $11,000. - This 50% reduction also applies to so-called light-duty vehicles' valued less than $24,000. - The same 50% reduction applies to heavy-duty vehicles, public transportation, tourism or student transportation, trucks, or tractors used in agriculture and used vehicles in car rentals. - In the case of vehicles with values between $11,000 and $16,100, the discount will be 25%. - Vehicles valued between $16,100 and $24,180 will have a 15% reduction. - While motorcycles valued at less than $1,600, will be exempted from the 13% IVA tax. According to the deputy Jonathan Prendas-Rodríguez, who voted in favor of the bill, the goal is to help Costa Ricans to be able to comply with the payment of this tax and also with the rest of the expenses they are experiencing. Deputy Laura Guido-Pérez, who voted against the bill, considers that it is irresponsible to reduce the tax because it implies reducing the State's income, which is used for public infrastructure works, thereby harming communities. The bill will be evaluated with a second round of voting in Congress within the next few days. If it is approved in the second round it will become a new law, after following the established procedure in Congress.
