declares a National Surf Day

Costa Rica staff The deputies of the Legislative Assembly voted in the first round in favor of bill No. 21.241, to declare the third Saturday of October as Surf National Day, in addition to declaring this sport as a public interest. According to deputy Melvin Núñez-Piña, this approval is important to support tourism because "600,000 people a year bring surfboards to the country. This is a great market, these surfers rented a car, booked hotels, or cabins, go to restaurants, and buy surfboard waxes. It benefits the economy and brings a lot of money to Costa Rica." The new bill also authorizes to the Costa Rican Sports Institute and the Costa Rican Tourism Institute, to take action and promote activities whose purpose is the commemoration of the Surf National Day. According to data provided by congress, in August 2009 the first Surf World Championship, organized by the Costa Rican Surf Federation, was held in Hermosa Beach*, in the province of Guanacaste. "According to estimates, it generated local commerce profits of $1.5 million," said congress in its statement. According to congress, 100,000 people attended the first Surf World Games. Seven years later, in 2016, Costa Rica once again hosted the Surf World Games. Related to the National Surf team, as A.M. Costa Rica reported on August 17th, the Surf Federation announced the team of six surfers who will compete in the World Surfing Games, which will take place from September 7th to 15th in Miyazaki, Japan. The surfers chosen by coach Jim Hogan to form the Costa Rica team are Jair Pérez, Noe Mar McGonagle, Carlos Muñoz, Eva Woodland, Leilani McGonagle, and Brisa Hennessy. According to the Federation, the highly-competitive level of surfers and the analysis of the surf conditions in Miyazaki were two of the factors that were taken into consideration when choosing the team members. Due to the recent Pan American Games in Peru, the International Surfing Association decided that members of the countries of the American continent will not be disputed for the World Cup in Japan. However, participation was authorized for those surfers who are in the first world division, Top 10, of the World Surfing League. Teams like the French and the US. were the first to announce their final squad to represent their countries in the World Cup in Japan. "Costa Rica will go with team 'A'. They will fight to be in the Top 10. The team will be filled with world surfing stars like never before in history," said the Federation in its statement. The International Surfing Association (ISA), founded in 1964, is recognized by the International Olympic Committee as the World Governing Authority for Surfing. The ISA governs and defines Surfing as Shortboard, Longboard & Bodyboarding, StandUp Paddle (SUP) Racing and Surfing, Bodysurfing, Wakesurfing, and all other wave riding activities on any type of waves, or on flat water using wave riding equipment. ------------------------ Besides declaring the National Surf Day, what else should the government do to increase the level of professional surfers in the country?
