China donates $12,000-plus in
supplies to Costa Rican police By the A.M. Costa Rica staff The Chinese government, through its embassy, donated $12,422 in supplies for the police, the Ministry of Security announced on Tuesday. Teng Heng, China's ambassador to Costa Rica, delivered 250 units of sunscreen, 25,000 disposable face masks, an 8x8-meter shelter and 164 pairs of boots that were delivered to the officers who patrol the northern border of the country with Nicaragua. “The friendship between Costa Rica and China for years leads us to think about the well-being of everybody and those who take care of its inhabitants, such as the police," said Heng. "This is a small, but valuable sample of the union we have ”. The Costa Rican embassy in China was reopened in 2007, during the presidency of Óscar Arias, when the embassy was moved from Taiwan to China. Sanitizing supplies are continuously donated by other governments. Last Wednesday, the government of Turkey, through its embassy and the Turkish Agency for Cooperation and Coordination, donated 25,000 filter respirators for front line health workers working with covid-19.  According to Román Macaya-Hayes, executive president of Social Security, the supplies, valued at $30,000, were purchased in Costa Rica following the technical specifications defined by the authorities. "We need to fight together against the pandemic that affects the whole world," said Fatma Pihava-Ünlü, Turkey's ambassador to Costa Rica, when delivering the donation.
