Costa Rica is well on its way to becoming a tourist destination for people who need a wheelchair for mobility thanks in part to a charity known as Red Costarricense de Turismo Accesible or the Costa Rican Accessible Tourism Network in the English Language. Red Costarricense de Turismo Accesible has been working on accessible tourism in Costa Rica, and one of their multiple achievements is the project “Playa Accessible.” Because of their efforts, Playa Hermosa, Guanacaste is the first of six beaches around Costa Rica to have 100% accessible infrastructure. ![]() More locations are under construction: Playa Jaco, Playa Dominical, Playa Samara in Guanacaste, Playa Manuel Antonio, and Playa Cahuita on the Caribbean coast. Each of these beaches have a variety of resources specially designed for the disabled, including retractable beach walkways, accessible beach showers and facilities, amphibious chairs, and much more to come. The Do It Foundation supports these types of projects and is donating wheelchairs on Feb. 27 through Liberia Lions Club. “Wheelchair accessible beaches help both local domestic and international tourists, and will make Costa Rica even more of a destination country” John Scheman, founder of The Do It Foundation said. “People with disabilities have the fundamental right to safety in architecture, transportation, personal mobility, and physical environment. We’re working to help encourage this so that everyone, regardless of mobility, may have all of the experiences that life in Costa Rica can offer.” Several wheelchairs by Do It Foundation will soon be available for anyone that may need them in Playa Hermosa, Guanacaste as part of the project “Playa Accessible” by Red Costarricense de Turismo Accesible.
