American Bank donatestests for covid-19 detection By the A.M. Costa Rica staff On Tuesday, the Honduras-based Central American Bank for Economic Integration, CABEI, donated 26,000 tests to Costa Rica for the detection of the coronavirus covid-19. According to the bank, a donation was part of the 182,000 tests purchased in Korea that were distributed among the Central American countries, as part of the Emergency Support and Preparedness Program for covid-19. The donation is given as part of the agreements assumed by the representatives of each country in March and the approval of the Regional Contingency Plan. Costa Rica's Foreign Minister Rodolfo Solano Quirós reported that medical supplies arrived in the country on a Honduras army plane at Juan Santamaría International Airport in Alajuela Province. In March, the President of the bank Dante Mossi held a meeting with Foreign Ministers and representatives of the Central American Integration System (SICA), in order to introduce the bank’s financial program amounting to $1.91 billion to face the health and economic crisis caused by the coronavirus pandemic. According to Mossi, this financial support has already begun its execution with $90 million for the financial strengthening of Costa Rican state banks. "The plan involves providing the region with resources that enable the countries of the region to pay for the expenses and expand their response to the effects generated by the coronavirus crisis," said the bank in its statement. ![]() In March the new Social Guarantees viaduct was put into service with a $17.6 million loan from the bank. The infrastructure aims to streamline vehicular flow at one of the busiest points in the city of San José. The viaduct in the city of Zapote is 864 meters long, with a 550-meter overpass. The overpass consists of six lanes in total, three in each direction; while the viaduct has four, two lanes per direction. Traffic authorities estimate a daily 70,000 vehicles use the road. The area of the roundabout, also called a traffic circle, was rebuilt with a design of gardens around the monument of Garantias Sociales. The roundabout is illuminated with LED lighting, which guarantees significant energy savings and allows safe traffic for drivers and pedestrians, said the government. The MECO company was the winner of the tender for the construction of the overpass. It was reported 300 people worked in this project of which 10% were women. In compliance with the sanitary provisions against covid-19, the work was opened to traffic through a virtual act by President Carlos Alvarado and other authorities. ------------------------ Should the country ask for more international loans to face the coronavirus crisis?
