The United Nations recognized the work of the Costa Rican health system, as well as the great commitment of health professionals who face covid-19, said the government on Wednesday.

The Ministry of Health confirmed on Wednesday the third death of an infected patient plus a total of 502 covid-19 cases in the country.  Of these
102 work in healthcare.

This recognition was given in celebration of World Health Day 2020, at a time when the pandemic has highlighted the fundamental roles that workers in public health systems play in saving lives.

The UN recommends more investment in education, improvement in working conditions and strengthening of leadership to improve the contributions of nurses to health systems, according to the Situation of Nursing in the World 2020 report by the World Health Organization.

"We recognize each person who makes the Health System in Costa Rica great with their work," said Alice Shackelford, UN representative. "The country is demonstrating that highly trained health workers, with a clear vocation and commitment and attention to all people, so that no one is left behind."

According to WHO representative María Dolores Pérez-Rosales, workers in the public health system inspire others to follow their example, and inspire to also protect them.

"Every time we follow the instructions of the health authorities regarding hygiene measures, physical distancing and staying at home, in addition to complying with the other administrative and social provisions, we are protecting them too," Pérez-Rosales said.

Since the second week of March, the government made immediate quarantine orders, borders closure, closed tourist centers, closed shops, suspended classes, applied an intricate ban on driving and sent workers to work from their homes, as many others as part of their measures to contain the spread of the coronavirus covid-19.
