By the A.M. Costa Rica staff The National System of Conservation Areas, SINAC, launched its campaign to protect animals from electric shocks. "The electricity service providers together with SINAC, have been finding ways and agreements on the care of the electrical fencing, so wild animals will not be harmed," Rafael Gutiérrez, Director of SINAC said. Because Costa Rica holds 5% of the world's biodiversity, meaning there is a large number of wild animals living in its tropical forests that must be protected. Between 2018 and 2019, the electrocution of around 7,000 wild animals such as monkeys, squirrels, sloths, raccoons, among many others, were reported, according to the National Electrocution Registry.  As part of the actions to protect wild animals, a guide was developed for the prevention and reduction of electrocuted animals. The guide has the goal of informing citizens of the ways to report injured animals and also to report any suspicion or complaint of areas with electrical fences in poor condition or problems due to growth of vegetation over the cables, among others. Authorities call on the public to present complaints on the Sitada website. To register a complaint, people should enter the section "Ingrese su Denuncia" (which means enter your complaint in the English language). After registering the complaint, the system will assign an identification number to track the complaint process. SINAC officials will be in charge of investigating the complaints. The investigation results will be emailed to the person who made the complaint. According to the authorities, online complaints are an important aid to their agents to keep a more precise record of reported sites with electrical fencing.
