Cahuita National Park constructs trail for people with disabilities

By the A.M. Costa Rica staff

In Cahuita National Park*, in the province of Limon, a path was made to make access to Blanca Beach easier for people with disabilities.

According to the park rangers, the 180-meter long trail was built by recycling plastic bottle screw caps.

The caps were collected through a campaign in which companies, schools, and the community of Cahuita participated. "By collecting 16 tons of plastic bottle screw caps," said park rangers in its statement.

The caps collection campaign was funded by authorities of the Cahuita National Park, the ProParques association and the local council in the community of Cahuita.

In addition to the construction of the trail, the campaign funds allowed for the purchase of amphibious wheelchairs.

Amphibious wheelchairs are designed for disabled people to reach the edge of the beach and sea waves.

"We allied with the Cahuita National Park because we found park rangers committed with the issue of accessibility," said Rocío Echeverri, executive director of ProParques.

According to ProParques, this is the third unusual path for people in wheelchairs, that was built within a protected wild area. The first trail was built in 2012 in Carara National Park and the second one was built in 2016 in Santa Rosa National Park.
