Costa Rica staff The Costa Rican USA Foundation for Cooperation, known as CRUSA, announced that one of its Agua Tica projects was selected among the five best in the world, in “Expo 2020 Dubai-Spoting SDG solutions”, which took place at the United Nations in New York. According to CRUSA, the project is the first public-private water and civil society fund in Costa Rica. Those in charge of the selection highlighted the potential of Agua Tica to be adapted, replicated and scaled to achieve a greater global impact. "Agua Tica was one of the five projects designated in the Water, Food, and Energy Security category," said the foundation in its statement. Agua Tica was chosen from 1,175 proposals from 141 countries, "as a powerful example of initiatives that provide solutions to the greatest challenges worldwide," said CRUSA. According to Flora Montealegre, president of the Board of Directors of Agua Tica, “this award recognizes an innovative initiative in solutions to address one of the greatest challenges of our planet, the security of water resources. " The Agua Tica project coordinates public and private investment to improve ecosystems in the greater metropolitan area, and thus contribute to the citizens of that area being able to have better quality and a greater quantity of water. The greater or major metropolitan area consists of parts of the provinces of San José*, Cartago*, Alajuela*, and Heredia*. Among the main partners that finance the project are: The Costa Rican Institute of Aqueducts, Coca-Cola FEMSA, the FEMSA Foundation, the CRUSA Foundation, the National Bank, and the National University. According to CRUSA, Agua Tica, is the first water fund in the country, contributes to the protection of water resources sources located in the sub-basins of the Grande River and Virilla River, both of the Tárcoles River basin. The greater metropolitan area faces great pressure on the water resource and its sources, due to high population growth, lack of land use planning and land-use change, said the foundation. The sub-basins suffer from the increasingly harmful effects of this reality, which brings the need to take actions that ensure the water resources in quantity and quality, it added. The initiative is based on science to join efforts, support and prioritize projects between public and private actors seeking efficiency in the investment of resources for the protection and conservation of water, the foundation said.
