industry increases
in the country By the A.M. Costa Rica staff The
biotech industry, by 2018, generated a total of
6,821 jobs in the country, according to a recent
study on the development of the biotechnology
industry in Costa Rica, carried out by the Foreign
Trade Promotion Agency.
Of the total jobs, 1,548 were positions dedicated to research and development activities, of which 60% correspond to female employment. According to the Agency, the study also revealed that revenues were around $629 million, equivalent to 1.05% of GDP. In terms of income, the average is three times higher than the average productivity of the rest of the economy. The study identified that in 2018, there were 87 companies and 42 research centers in the country. Also, 48 of the companies have already exported and 60% have participated in trade fairs. Specialists from the agency recommend the government to support the development of the biotechnology sector by taking the following actions: • Simplifying work processes between research centers and the private sector • Increasing more access to financing • Strengthen the relationship between research and industry, since, beyond the sale of laboratory services or products, few research centers have agreements for the development of technologies for commercial purposes. The biotechnology industry has been developing in the country since 1950, when the first cell biology laboratories were founded in the medical area. Currently, companies develop agricultural, forestry, livestock, health and medicine biotechnology, said the agency in its statement. -------------------------- What other advice would you give to the authorities to improve the booming biotechnology industry in the country?
