By the A.M. Costa Rica staff Motorcycle plates will now be larger. According to the National Property Registry, a public organization in charge of registering and issuing the vehicles license plates, this bigger size will allow for easier identification, when needed, by people, police or any other authority. License plate numbers will be more visible this way, making it easier to identify via recording systems with cameras on the road, the Registry said. The new plates will increase from 102x205 millimeters to 153x205 millimeters. "The main difference from the current format is that it will be 51mm higher to improve visibility and safety on the road," they said in a statement. These are expected to be delivered to riders in August. This will only apply to cases of a new plate request or a replacement of an old plate due to loss or deterioration. Another modification is the new plate will have six numbers and the letter "M" that distinguishes motorcycles. In the case of people who do not have 6 numbers in their plate code, the number zero will be added to the left. Currently, in the country there are almost a million plates with 5 digits, so it is necessary to enable a space for when plates with 6 digits are issued. "The new format will make it possible to face the necessary change when the 1,000,000th motorcycle license plate assignment is reached because this change in size will make it possible to change the motorcycle license plate format to alphanumeric plates that combine, just like (the rest of vehicles) three numbers and three letters," the authorities said. People interested in obtaining new big plates must follow the procedure established by the Registry on its ( Spanish language ) website.  Almost half of traffic accident deaths were riders.
