Online money transfers known as Sistema Nacional de Pagos Electrónicos SINPE (National System of Online Payments in the English language) are tax-exempt, the Ministry of Finance said on Wednesday.

According to the ministry, the authorities' intention to impose the 13% value-added tax, IVA, on all money transfers made online is fake information.

The truth is that online transactions such as transferring money between accounts, sending payments to family or friends, are tax exempt.

The 13% IVA tax applies only for the purchase of products or the acquisition of professional services. This tax must be detailed on the invoice.

Authorities call on the public to report any suspicion that 13% VAT is being overcharged for making payments with the SINPE platform.

Complaints can be made to the ministry line 2539-4647 or through the Denuncias ( Complains in English language) website.
