suppress
spread of covid-19 during the holiday season By the A.M. Costa Rica staff December is a month that encourages meetings and celebrations with families, friends or coworkers to celebrate holidays, such as Christmas, Jewish Hanukkah, Kwanzaa in African-Descendant communities or New Year's Eve. This year, due to the global health crisis caused by the covid-19 pandemic, authorities of the National Emergency Commission, the Ministry of Health and Social Security call on the population to follow the Safe December guidelines to avoid an increase in the infections of the virus and enjoy the holiday season more safely. If people follow the guidelines, a surge in infections and deaths in the country could be avoided. Among the main rules, that already most of the people know, are: • Always use the face mask correctly in public areas. • Wash your hands constantly. • Maintain the social distancing of 1.8 meters between people. • Avoid closed and crowded places. • If you must leave your house, move through ventilated places, or outdoors. • If you have flu symptoms, or sick, stay home. • If you are going to meet other people, who do not belong to your social bubble, let it be for a short time, keeping your distance, using a face mask and stay in a place with natural ventilation. • Don't eat near people who do not belong to your bubble, having to remove the mask to eat increases the risk of contagion. • Always maintain precautionary measures with elders or those who suffer from chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, obesity, or respiratory diseases, among others. These people may be more susceptible to complications from covid-19 disease and even death. According to data provided by Social Security, intensive care units are close to full. Of the 314 beds in these units, more than 200 are occupied by covid-19 patients, eight are free and the remainder are occupied by patients with other severe diseases. If people don't take precautionary measures to avoid covid-19, and there is a speedy increase in infections during holidays, there may not be the capacity to care for more infected patients in public hospitals. On Wednesday, the Health Ministry provided the most up-to-date statistics on the evolution of the virus in the country: • 1,168 new covid-19 cases, bringing the total to 51,375 active cases. • 19,913 foreign-born people have been infected with a total of 141,340 cases since March, approximately 14% of the total cases. Of these, authorities confirmed the death of 32 foreign-born patients. But since October, there is no updated information about foreign-born deaths due to covid-19. • 571 patients are being treated in public hospitals, where 224 patients are in ICU’s in delicate health conditions (ages range from 1 to 88-year-old). And 347 patients are in recovery rooms. Many of the remaining infected patients are quarantined in their homes. • 88,226 coronavirus patients have fully recovered, which is a 62.6% recovery rate of the total cases since March. • 398,784 medical covid-19 tests have been performed in Costa Rica since March, this according to the Center for Systems Science and Engineering of Johns Hopkins University, • 1,739 deaths of people infected with covid-19, approximately 1.2% death rate of the total cases since March. Of these 655 women and 1,084 men. The ages range from a 9-year-old to a 101-year-old person.
