-Thursday, November 21, 2019- By the A.M. Costa Rica staff Álvaro Vargas Segura, acting director-general of Civil Aviation, said that the studies carried out by the British company Mott Macdonald Group to build a new metropolitan airport for Costa Rica could be completed this year. Vargas appeared Wednesday before the deputies of the Special Commission of the Legislative Assembly, who referred to the progress in relation to the construction of the new airport in the city of Orotina, in the Province of Alajuela. According to Vargas, there are currently four international airports, Juan Santamaria Airport in Alajuela, Daniel Oduber Airport in Guanacaste, Limón Airport and Tobias Bolaños Airport in San José Centro. So this next study to be completed focuses on a new airport in Orotina and also considers the construction of three more airports in San Carlos, San Isidro de El General and Quepos. The study of the metropolitan airport is contemplated to provide the parameters to employ a firm to prepare an airport and regional development plan for Costa Rica that serves as a guide for future development policies, said Vargas in his appearance at Congress. According to Vargas, the project of the new airport in Orotina defines the demand for passengers, as well as contemplates road construction and land purchases, among other needs. The construction of the new airport could be financed with loans from the Inter-American Development Bank, Vargas said. However, until the end of the study, the details of the budget for the construction of the airport in Orotina will not be known. According to Vargas, all the studies that have been carried out place Orotina as one of the most feasible spots to build an airport because the ground conditions are flat and the site is close to the capital, among other advantages. However, Deputy Nidia Céspedes Cisneros said that the possibility of building a new airport is not real, because the minister of Public Works, Rodolfo Méndez Mata, had said in a previous appearance that there is no budget to develop the construction project of the New airport. ----------------------------------- Should the government request a loan from the Inter-American Development Bank to build the new Metropolitan Airport in Orotina?
