Authorities announce Orange Alert cantons due to covid-19 spike and ban-on-driving rule for February

On Tuesday, the National Emergency Commission announced more changes in the areas declared in Orange Alert due to an increase in patients infected with covid-19, as well as the new ban-on-driving rule for February.
According to the commission, the cantons in Orange Alert are:
• Moravia, Pérez Zeledón and Vázquez de Coronado in San José Province.
• Grecia, Guatuso, Naranjo, Sarapiquí, Sarchí and Zarcero, in Alajuela Province.
• El Guarco in Cartago Province.
• Corredores, Coto Brus, Golfito, Osa, and Quepos in Puntarenas Province.
• Limón Central, Guácimo, Pococí and Siquirres in Limón Province.
There are no cantons under Orange Alert in the provinces of Guanacaste and Heredia.
The updated list of cantons under Orange Alert can be found on the government's website under Covid-19/Alerta/Canton.
Due to the accelerated increase of infected patients and deaths caused by the virus, the ban-on-driving rule continues during February, as follows.

On weekdays, the ban-on-driving-rules is from Monday through Friday, allowing driving between the hours of 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. Vehicles are banned based on the last number of the license plate number:
• Monday: Vehicles banned with plates ending in 1 or 2.
• Tuesday: Vehicles banned with plates ending in 3 or 4.
• Wednesday: Vehicles banned with plates ending in 5 or 6.
• Thursday: Vehicles banned with plates ending in 7 or 8.
• Friday: Vehicles banned with plates ending in 9 or 0.
• On Saturdays, the hours remain from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m., and vehicles with plates ending in 1, 3, 5, 7, 9 are banned.
• On Sundays, driving is allowed from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m., vehicles with plates ending in 0, 2, 4, 6, and 8 are banned.

The new restrictions for businesses, such as restaurants, banks, shopping centers, tourist centers, among others, are listed on each canton alert.
The Ministry of Health officials recommend for managers or business representatives with inquiries about the weekday ban on driving, business restrictions and guidelines to directly call their headquarters at (506) 2223-0333.
