Athletes receive more than $93,000 in prize

The Costa Rican Sports Institute awarded $93,042 to the 48 champions of the Alfredo Cruz Bolaños Awards, for participation in the National Sports Games 2019, which were held from June 29 to July 13th.

The ceremony took place in the Production Hall of the National Stadium and was presented by the members of the National Sports Council.

According to the Institute, each athlete received an award that accredits them as the best athletes in the games, in addition to the prize of $93,042, which represents $1,940 for each discipline.

The champions received the prize in the representation of the 20 thousand athletes who competed in the games.

According to the Institute, of a total of 48 award-winning athletes, the representatives of San José and Pérez Zeledón won the most awards with seven awards each.

Athletes representing Belén de Heredia won five awards.

The athletes of Alajuela, Desamparados and the province of Heredia received four awards respectively.

The athletes of Cartago won three awards.

The athletes representing Alajuelita and Escazú two each.

And the athletes of Limón, Siquirres, San Ramón, Coronado, Santa Cruz, Santa Bárbara, Zarcero, Santa Ana, Grecia and Esparza with one prize each.

Related to recent internationals games winners, as A.M. Costa Rica reported on Sept 5, the Costa Rican athlete Andrea Vargas, won third place in the women's 100m hurdles, with a time of 12.84 seconds, in the Zagreb World Challenge, which took place in Croatia.

In the race, Andrea Vargas competed along with five U.S. athletes, Cristina Clemons, Queen Claye, Sharika Nelvis, Payton Chadwick, Tiffani Mc Reynolds, and Alina Talay from Belarus and Ivana Loncarek from Croatia.

According to the Olympic Committee's report, Vargas ran in lane 7. On her left was Payton Chadwick from the U.S. and on her right Ivana Loncarek from Croatia.

She also won second place in the race Gala de Castelli in Switzerland.

In that competition, Vargas reached the finish line in 12.86 seconds, "just a second behind the winner, Cindy Ofili from the U.K.," said the Committee in its statement.

According to the Committee, these international competitions for Vargas are part of the training to participate in the World Athletics Championships in Doha Qatar in October, and in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
