By the A.M. Costa Rica staff The last batch of 1,305 pre-Columbian pieces from the Brooklyn Museum in the U.S. arrived in the country today. Those pieces, belonging to controversial U.S. businessman Minor Cooper Keith's private collection, were finally returned to the country after he took them to the United States in the 19th century. ![]() Keith, who died in 1929, was president and founder of the United Fruit Company and whose railroad, commercial agriculture, and cargo liner enterprises had a major impact on the national economies of the Central American countries. Leading to political and internal crisis in the region. The pieces were sent to the United States by Keith, the man who built the Atlantic railroad and had vast banana holdings on the Caribbean coast. The pieces are presumed to have come from land purchased by Keith. The pieces arriving today will be on display for a couple of hours at the National Museum gallery in Pavas Canton, San José Province, for the press. After this, the collection will be sent for inspection and cataloging to the main Museum storage. In 2012, the Insurance Institute paid $59,000 to bring back to Costa Rica an assortment of approximately 16,000 archaeological pieces that wound up in the Brooklyn Museum which is returning the pieces voluntarily. Extensive collections of pre-Columbian handcrafts can be seen at the National Museum, Banco Central Museum and Jade Museum. -------------------------- Have you seen any of the pre-Columbian collections in Costa Rican museums?
