Costa Rica staff With the goal to speed up the vaccination process, Gisela Sánchez, President of the Costa Rican-American Chamber of Commerce, AmCham, urges U.S. citizens and Costa Rican citizens to sign the petition " Vaccines to Costa Rica" which aims to ask President Biden to donate vaccines to Costa Rica. The Costa Rican government had purchased 6,000,425 million doses of Pfizer. And another 1,092,000 doses of AstraZeneca. Plus 2,037,600 doses purchased through the Covid-19 Vaccines Global Access (COVAX system) of the World Health Organization. That is a total of 9,130,025 doses to ensure treatment for more than 4.5 million people, reported the National Emergency Commission.  On Monday, AmCham in association with other private chambers of commerce urged President Carlos Alvarado to contact Joe Biden, the President of the United States, to request a donation of at least 1.5 million vaccines against covid-19. Sánchez, President of AmCham, also asked the National Vaccination Commission to speed-up the authorization of other vaccines available to the country. "If the registration process does not move forward, the country could run out of these vaccines when they are approved by the European Medicines Agency (EMA), the World Health Organization (WHO) and the US Food and Drug Administration. (FDA)," AmCham said. "Costa Rica must speed up the vaccination campaign," Sánchez said. "The country's goal must be to achieve herd immunity to protect citizens and reactivate our economy." Herd immunity, also known as “population immunity” is a form of indirect protection from infectious disease that can occur with some diseases when a sufficient percentage of a population has become immune to an infection, whether through vaccination or previous infections, thereby reducing the likelihood of infection for individuals who lack immunity, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Last month AmCham requested for the U.S. to consider Costa Rica for vaccine donations. They are currently donating to other nations such as Canada and Mexico. According to AmCham, among the advantages of prompt vaccination in Costa Rica are: quickly achieving herd immunity, turning Costa Rica into a tourist destination safe for travelers, and normalizing the operations of companies in the country to promote economic growth and general well-being of the citizens. “Based on the excellent relationship and cooperation between the U.S. and Costa Rica, we request respectfully to the U.S. government to consider Costa Rica as a strategic destination for the donation of vaccines," Sánchez said. The geographic proximity and the extensive commercial relationships with the U.S. make Costa Rica a priority country for available vaccine donations once the U.S. meets its goal of vaccinating much of its adult population in the coming weeks, she said. Despite recognizing the efforts of the Ministry of Health, Social Security and other government organizations to vaccinate the population as soon as possible, the Chamber said they are looking for other options to get more vaccines and hurry the vaccination campaign in the country. In April, the U.S. announced support for global vaccine distribution, according to the Share America report, the U.S. Department of State’s platform for communicating American foreign policy worldwide. According to the report, many citizens of developing nations will receive covid-19 vaccines thanks to funds being raised by the U.S. and partner organizations. The recently launched investment opportunity in support of Covid-19 Vaccines Global Access (COVAX), Facility Advance Market Commitment (AMC) aims to raise $2 billion to procure and distribute up to 1.8 billion safe and effective vaccines to low and middle-income countries. ------------------ Should the U.S. donate vaccines against covid-19 to Costa Rica?
