Almost $1 million budgeted for a new
bridge in the Braulio-Carrillo Park

A new bridge, budgeted at $905,309, will be built in the community of El Ceibo, Sarapiquí Canton, to expedite entry to the Braulio Carrillo National Park throughout the year, which will allow an increase in visitors to the park.

The cost is funded by the Rural Development Institute, as part of its plan for the development of rural areas.

“In the last five years, this area has received investments of more than $2.8 million in more than 10 infrastructure projects, including the construction of roads, water storage tanks, other bridges, such as the one was built in La Tirimbina community, among other projects,” Harys Regidor, president of the institute said.

Construction of the bridge, at the park located on the Central Volcanic Mountain Range, between the Poás and Irazú volcanoes, is expected to begin in the coming months.

The park is one of the largest protected areas in Costa Rica with 50,000 hectares and is located in one of the zones with the steepest topography in the country. The land includes high mountains covered with forests and a large number of canyons through which rivers and streams flow.

The Braulio Carrillo National Park has two sectors for visitors, such as the Quebrada González River and Barva Volcano, in which facilities are provided for visitors. It also includes the tropical forest area known as El Ceibo, which is dedicated to research.

This is the third investment in infrastructure announced this month for the reopening of a national park.

On Thursday, after eight months of being closed to the public, the Corcovado National Park, located on southwest Costa Rica's Osa Peninsula, Pacific Coast, will reopen.

As part of the reopening programs, the Corcovado Community Association, the organization in charge of providing services to tourists who visit the park, received a loan of $16,622 from the institute for the rehabilitation of the site of lodging, food and souvenir shop that is installed in the park.

According to the institute, the loan will be used to condition the place following the sanitary guidelines required by the health authorities. The community association consists of 450 families that will be able to receive more income with the services they provide to tourists visiting the park.

Corcovado maintains 2.5% of the world's biodiversity, which is why it is visited by 35,000 people annually, according to the government. It is the third national park to reopen in less than one month.

Also on Friday, after eight years of being closed to the public due to the risks of eruptions, the Turrialba Volcano National Park, located in Cartago Province, reopened to visitors.

Among the main improvements that have been made in the park are: the remodeling of the entrance, the booth for the attention of visitors, the repair of restrooms for visitors, the rest and security zone installed for visitors.

Also, railings were built in the area of the panoramic viewpoint and seven protected areas, which covers the ascent path from the visitor service booth to the crater viewpoint and the path known as Chusquea.

In 2012, the Turrialba Volcano experienced frequent volcanic activity with phreatic eruptions of moderate intensity.

As of 2016, the volcanic activity decreased, allowing a period of improvements in the facilities.
