Recently a scam method, so-called phishing, has been detected about malicious emails using the brand of messaging and online shopping services of the public company Correos de Costa Rica, announced the Fraud and Cybercrime Prosecutor's Office.

Phishing is a type of social engineering where an attacker sends a fraudulent message designed to trick a victim into revealing sensitive information to the attacker or to deploy malicious software on the victim's infrastructure like ransomware.

Phishing attacks have become increasingly sophisticated and often transparently mirror the site being targeted, allowing the attacker to observe everything while the victim is navigating the site, and transverse any additional security boundaries with the victim.

According to the Prosecutor's report, some people have received an email that pretends to be from Correos de Costa Rica. In this malicious email, the customer is informed about a package that could not be sent because part of the cost service was not yet paid. The message also asks the client to go to a specific link to resolve the situation.

Both the message and the link are fake and not generated by the Correos de Costa Rica company. This is a malicious email that seeks to cause harm to the client.

If the URL address or the sender email address is not to the official website of that company, https://correos.go.cr/, do not open.

Phishing is a strategy used by criminals intended to mislead people. Some people take some precautionary measures, such as verifying if the mail contains images or logos similar to those of Correos de Costa Rica, but most of the people do not verify that the URL address is the official one. And it is there, when the fraud happens.

People who are doing some type of transaction with Correos de Costa Rica are recommended to verify emails received directly with the company's customer service department. This, before making an error that could cause loss of money.

In addition, authorities ask for people to never share personal information by email or by calls. Victims tend to divulge sensitive banking information such as passwords or bank account codes, according to authorities.

Costa Ricans are trusted or naive people by nature, which is a trait that scammers take advantage of, according to Esteban Aguilar-Vargas, Fraud and Cybercrime Prosecutor, who advised on how to avoid the most common scams in Costa Rica.

Authorities ask for people to report any suspicion of receiving fake emails or being a victim of a scam to the Judicial Investigation Organization confidential line 800-8000-645.

Last year, a similar situation happened with fake emails using the Amazon brand. The U.S. Embassy warned about false information that is being spread on social media, WhatsApp and text messages about fake food and money donations.

A.M. Costa Rica urges readers to share this alert with their contacts.
