-Published: Friday, December 6, 2019- Alert for the
crossing
of the cold front continues
By the A.M. Costa Rica staff
The National Commission of Emergencies, announcement Thursday a warning of green alert status continues throughout the country due to a cold front that is advancing on the Caribbean seacoast. According to the commission, this is the second cold front to reach the country this year. The natural phenomenon is expected to move to the border with Nicaragua Friday morning. The cold front has caused " cloudiness and rain in the north and Caribbean zones, as well as moderate winds in the Central Valley, north Pacific zone and the mountains," said the commission in its statement. "The rains in the Caribbean coast will decrease by Saturday." At the close of the edition, the commission said that there were no emergencies caused by this front. According to the National Meteorological Institute, during Thursday night the cold front was crossing the Caribbean Sea and reaching the border with Nicaragua. "An increase in rainfall levels is expected in the Caribbean regions, the North Zone with increasing estimates between 40-80 mm with possible maximums of up to 100 mm," said the institute in its statement. Another area affected by rain is the province of Guancaste, where the institute estimates rainfall accumulated between 10-30 mm and maximums of up to 50 mm. As for the wind, it is estimated that the gusts continue to be moderate with values between 20-50 kilometers per hour, this in the lower parts of the Central Valley and Pacific Coast. However, specialists warn of strong winds in mountain areas with ranges between 40-80 kilometers per hour. Also, there will be a decrease in temperatures between 2 degrees C to 3 degrees C today in the mountains, the Central Valley and the north Pacific. "The gusty conditions in the center and north of the national territory and the rains in the Caribbean will continue even on Saturday," said the institute in its statement. Specialists recommend taking precautions due to high gusts and their possible impact on roofs, electrical wiring, signs, trees. Particularly vulnerable are the mountainous parts of the country like within national parks, or around volcanoes. Also recommended is to take precaution in areas vulnerable to flooding due to saturation of sewers and increased flow in rivers and streams. Also caution is urged in sectors with risk of landslides, especially in the Caribbean, the North Zone and areas near the mountains in the Central Valley and Guanacaste. Vessels are recommended to avoid sailing due to the risk of strong waves in the North Pacific, Gulf of Nicoya, Central Pacific and the Caribbean Sea. Specialists also recommend avoiding taking flights that cross mountainous areas due to the increase in high winds. Or at least, take more precaution when the aircraft cross those areas. A call was also made for people to avoid any type of controlled burn because high winds could cause a small fire to become a blaze in a few minutes. A.M. Costa Rica urges readers to share this alert with their contacts, as well recommend tourists to increase precautionary measures if they are going to sail or take a local flight. -------------------- Do you know anyone who should take a local flight or going to sail during this weekend?
