The giant African snail (Lissachatina fulica ), in the community of Curubandé, Liberia Canton, Guanacaste Province, led the government to declare a State of Phytosanitary Emergency. The snail is native to West Africa. An adult snail is around 7.9 inches in length. It’s considered a pest due to its invasive nature and its slime being a disease vector for meningitis. According to the Ministry of Agriculture, the emergency declaration has the goal of preventing the snail from spreading, putting national agriculture, public health and the environment at risk. The alert will be maintained for two years and can be extended until the pest is controlled. The goal is eradication, which is expected to be achieved with the support of the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). According to the authorities, the plague has only been reported in the Dominican Republic and Costa Rica.
