Advances on credit card payment system for public transport

By the A.M. Costa Rica staff

The project that will allow people to pay all public transport services through credit or debit cards have been approved, announced the Ministry of Transport on Wednesday.

In other countries, the successful development of this type of system has lasted between 4 and 8 years. In Costa Rica, progress has been made since the formal start of the project in 2018, said the ministry.

The public transport credit card payment system will be implemented gradually, starting with the train service, followed by bus routes.

According to the project schedule, in February 2021 the train tickets can be paid with debit or credit cards.

In September 2021, bus services may be paid with a card.

To guarantee access for all people to public transport services, payment with cash will continue to be accepted until authorities decide that it is no longer necessary, said the ministry.
