Police officers arrested
on suspicion of robbery

By the A.M. Costa Rica staff

Three police officers were arrested on Tuesday, on suspicion of being part of a violent robbery that happened in the District of Atenas in Alajuela Province, announced the Judicial Investigation Organization.

According to information provided by the judicial agents, the three policemen surnamed Baltodano, Venegas and Fernandez were detained during raids in their homes. Two lived in San Rafael and Río Segundo in Alajuela Province. The third arrest happened in Nandayure, located in Guanacaste Province.

The burglary happened on April 13, when two men trespassed a private parking lot located in Atenas. The lot provides parking for mainly trailers, and serves as a transfer point for truck drivers to load merchandise for transport to other countries, said the judicial agents.

On the day of the events, at 3 p.m two men attacked two Guatemalan truck drivers who were in the private parking.

The suspects told the victims they were carrying out a special raid operation, then proceeded to spend an hour going through the trucks. Failing to find what they were looking for, they allegedly stole the drivers' belongings, including cash and cell phones, said the judicial agent in the report.

Outside the parking lot sat a patrol vehicle parked with the three police officers. "The police patrol seemed to be guarding the site," officers said.

According to the investigation, the three policemen detained on Tuesday were identified as being the same men seen inside the patrol vehicle parked outside the lot where the robbery had taken place.

"The investigation was able to determine the participation of the suspects in the robbery," the agents said in their report.

The three suspects were jailed at the Public Ministry cells, where they were interrogated by the judicial agents. They are currently waiting for a judge who will consider pre-trial measures against them.

The case continues under investigation.
